Methodist Counseling Center

“Chrysalis Life Centers: Renewing lives through counseling, education, and spiritual direction.”

That’s the new name and description of the Methodist Counseling Center, first opened in Greensboro in 1982 as a pastoral counseling center. Much has changed in the quarter century since. Then there were only two counselors. The spiritually-based, United Methodist counseling ministry now utilizes the professional skills of six active therapists in three offices: Lexington, High Point, and the main office, Greensboro. Then, pastoral counseling was the only service offered clients. Counseling is still at the heart of Chrysalis’ ministry, but today workshops and church consultations, psycho-educational seminars and training events, mediation for church leaders and many other services are growing under the leadership of Chrysalis Life Center Director Rev. Gary Kling. Recent examples of group services include Enneagram workshops led by Rev. Elaine and Tom Kebba, Marriage Enrichment groups led by Rev. Jack and Linda Hileman, and pastoral consultations by Dr. Lee Dukes.

Dr. Harry Long, former center director, continues to offer counselor supervision for those in the Greensboro area.

Reaching out with spiritually-informed services into the Greensboro, High Point, and Lexington districts, the centers are seeking to expand services to the Winston-Salem and Northeast districts in the future. Chrysalis is also broadening and deepening its focus on meeting mental health needs of churches, families and individuals. Marriage counseling, individual therapy and family services are available to Methodists (both lay and clergy) and all others at all three offices. Chrysalis Life Centers will increasingly seek to support pastors and pastoral families in coming months.

You can help Chrysalis support the ministry of the church. A survey of clergy families’ mental health needs will be presented to ministers of the three districts this year, and new workshops and events will be in development as feed back becomes integrated into action plans. Please respond to this survey.

Your prayers and vocal support for quality, spiritually-informed mental health services is needed. Churches can become contributing supporters through a yearly financial gift or on a continuing basis.

Rev. Kling welcomes your input and can answer your questions. Chrysalis Life Centers are working to play a greater supportive role in your ministry.
